Creative Sustainability to make sleeping mats for homeless shelters
The Creative Sustainability Council and Honors Program at Fairmont State University are working together to make string out of plastic bags to crochet into sleeping mats for homeless shelters.
Angelica Starcovic, president of the Honors Program, said they hosted an event from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23 in the lobby of Prichard.
“Sarah Starcovic taught participants how to turn the plastic grocery bags into ‘string’ and prepare it to be woven into sleeping mats to be donated to homeless shelters,” she said. “The event was sponsored by Honors with the Creative Sustainability Council but all were welcome to join us.”
Although the event was held in April, the bag collection will continue beyond the scope of the event, Starcovic said. They will be collecting old but clean plastic bags because it takes 60 bags to create one mat. Donations of scissors or a rotary cutter will also be appreciated.
Collection boxes for bags can be found with the Creative Sustainabiliity Council Members who will take care of them at the following locations:
- Nathan Meyers, outside 314 Jaynes Hall
- Ann Shaver, 128 Hardway
- Amy Snively, 316 Turley
- Siegfried Bleher, 320 Hunt Haught Hall
- Tom Cuchta, Engineering Technology main office
- Pat Snively, second floor lobby in the Feaster Center
