The Veteran Services Office is here to serve the Fairmont State University Veteran/Dependent
Students by providing benefit and educational counseling, program information, referral
to various agencies, and certification of eligible students to receive education benefits
under various state and federal programs while maintaining a congenial working relationship
with the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies serving veterans.
The Director of Veteran Services is here to assist all veterans and dependents of
veterans with benefits, financial aid, etc. In the absence of the Director of Veteran
Service, please visit the Turley Center for assistance.
Once you choose your benefit, a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will be mailed to
you - Please bring your VA COE (allow 30-60 days to receive once requested from VA)
and DD-214 to the Veteran Services Office.
A VA Form 28-1900 needs to be submitted to the VA to apply for Vocational Rehabilitation
benefits. You must have 20% or greater service-connected disability rating to be eligible
for CH 31 benefits.
Once you submit the VA Form 28-1900 you will be contacted by a VA Vocational Rehabilitation
Counselor, who will set up an appointment to review your request. If you are approved
to receive the CH 31 benefits, the VA Counselor will send an Authorization Certificate
-VA Form 28-1905 - to the University. The VA Counselor will set up follow up appointments
as needed.
Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH): All students calculated at E-5 paygrade, w/wo
dependent(s), 26554 Zip Code (COL based on University location)
To be eligible to receive your full BAH you must be enrolled full time. At FSU 12
hours, is full time during the fall and spring semesters and 4 hours is full time
during summer sessions. If you take all online classes you will only receive half
of your BAH - at least one of your classes must be on campus for you to be considered
full time. The BAH payment will be sent directly to you.
Tuition, Fees, and books
100% of your tuition and fees are covered. Books and supplies can be purchased through
an account at the campus book store. This account has a $700.00 cap set for books
and a $50.00 cap set for supplies. If your books cost more than the allotted $700.00
you need to advise your counselor and they will make adjustments as needed. Any other
special supplies must be approved by your VA counselor.

All Tuitions and Fees are paid, excluding any fees for parking, housing, meals, printing,
or any other non-education fees. FSU participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

35 Educational Benefits must be listed under the veteran’s VA medical claim and they
must submit a VA Form 22-5490 to the VA to receive education benefits.
If you do not fill this form out every semester, you will not be certified with the
VA for your classes.
CHAMP
If you are using the CHAMP VA medical benefit you need to let the Veteran Certifying
Official know so a letter of attendance will be sent every semester to the VA.

you - Please bring your COE and DD-214 to the Veteran Services Office. Veterans are eligible for priority registration.
