‘Tis the Season: Fairmont State University’s Folklife Center to Celebrate the Holidays with Upcoming Community Events

The Folklife Center

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center at Fairmont State University has two upcoming holiday events featuring festive songs, stories, and dancing. Both events are free of charge and open to the public.

Beginning Friday, December 5 at 7 p.m., the West Virginia Storytelling Guild will perform holiday stories and songs. Five storytellers from across the state will share songs and lore filled with seasonal cheer. This has become an annual tradition at Fairmont State University, with tellers of all ages performing old and new tales.

"The holiday season is a traditional time for settling in on a cold winter's night to listen to cherished tales,” said teller Judi Tarowsky. “This curated collection of stories will wrap you in cozy comfort!”

On Saturday, December 6th at 7 p.m., Fairmont State University's Artist in Residence, Annick Odom, will lead her second Folklife Center square dance. This event will feature musicians, Annie Stroud and John Posey, and callers, Gray Buchanan and Montaiginey Linden. Folks do not need to attend with prior experience or a partner. This event is meant to be a welcoming environment for students and community members to learn how to square dance.

“This is our first holiday season square dance,” said Folklife Center Director Lydia Warren, PhD. “We hope it becomes a tradition, just like the Storytelling Guild holiday event, marking the beginning of a special and fun season!”

The Folklife Center is located on Squibb Wilson Boulevard on the campus of Fairmont State University. There is accessible parking outside of the Folklife Center and the building has an elevator to the second floor where the event will be held. Everyone in the community is invited to attend and join in the merriment.
