The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host two community-focused events in October, both free and open to the public. The first event, a square dance, will take place Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., followed by the launch of a traditional music jam series Friday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Fairmont State University has received $2,000 through the West Virginia Humanities Council. This grant will be used to curate, promote, and actualize Sand and Fire: 200 Years of West Virginia Glass, a Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center exhibit highlighting how the glass industry led to significant economic development in West Virginia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
One of the most notable events at the Folklife Center is the Wartz ‘n All Dulcimer Jam, held twice a year. The next jam is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, beginning at 10 a.m. This free event is open to the public, inviting everyone to participate by playing or simply enjoying the music. New players can borrow cardboard dulcimers to join in the fun. The day will wrap-up around 3 p.m.
Fairmont State University’s Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host the Wartz ‘n All Dulcimer Jam on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lap dulcimer players, as-well-as all other acoustic musicians, are invited to attend. For beginner dulcimer players or those curious about the instrument, the Folklife Center will have cardboard dulcimers to lend.
Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will present the West Virginia Storytelling Guild’s spring concert, titled “All Things New.”
Fairmont State University’s Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host two back-to-back events on Saturday, April 13. A new exhibition will be presented at noon and following that will be a set of literary and musical performances.
The Frank and Jane Gabor Folklife Center will host the Robert Lackey Memorial Jam on Sunday, March 3 from 2-6 pm. The Folklife Center is located on Squibb Wilson Boulevard on the campus of Fairmont State University. This event is free and open to the public.
New Fairmont State University President, Dr. Mike Davis, will make his inaugural visit to the West Virginia State Capitol along with more than 25 Fairmont State University students, faculty, alumni, and staff on Monday, January 29.
