Fairmont State University recently dedicated a new Trex bench on campus, celebrating the success of a student-led sustainability initiative spearheaded by one of the university’s newest student organizations, the Rotaract Club.

The project showcases the impact of student leadership and community collaboration. The Rotaract Club is advised by Dr. Alysia Davis, First Lady of Fairmont State, and led by club president Katelyn Virts, an elementary education major from Kearneysville, WV.

Established during the current academic year, the Rotaract Club has already made a meaningful contribution to campus sustainability efforts through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Fairmont. Together, the two organizations launched a plastic bag recycling initiative as part of the Trex Company’s nationwide community recycling program.

After collecting and recycling more than 1,000 pounds of plastic film, the club earned a Trex bench made entirely from those recycled materials.

The Rotary Club, part of an international network of service organizations, supports causes such as peacebuilding, disease prevention, clean water access, education and economic development. That mission—to serve others, uphold high ethical standards and promote global understanding—is reflected in the work of the Rotaract Club at Fairmont State.

“I wanted to join because I knew I could make a meaningful impact on campus and in the community,” Virts said. “I was part of the Interact Club in high school, so saying yes felt natural.”

Reflecting on her time with the club, Virts highlighted the opportunities for growth and collaboration. “I’ve gained valuable insight into the importance of working with student groups, faculty, staff and community partners,” she said. “Without their support, we wouldn’t have been able to reach our goal of installing the bench.”

Dr. Alysia Davis shared similar enthusiasm about her role as advisor. “Working with the Rotaract students this year has been a great experience,” she said. “In partnership with the Rotary Club of Fairmont, we’ll continue our recycling efforts to place more benches throughout the community. Looking ahead to the fall, our primary focus will be recruitment, and we’re hopeful that more students will be inspired to get involved.”

Virts also emphasized the club’s focus on growing its membership, while noting that participation isn’t limited to members. “Next semester, we have about five members graduating, so our priority will be recruiting new students,” she said. “We’re always excited to have non-members get involved, so don’t hesitate to reach out!”

The bench dedication ceremony recognized the teamwork and shared commitment behind the project, celebrating values of sustainability, service and student empowerment. The new bench now serves as a lasting symbol of environmental stewardship and community spirit at Fairmont State.
