Fairmont State University enhances aviation in West Virginia with the addition of two new aircraft

Fairmont State University’s premier flight program is soaring to new heights with the addition of two new aircraft, increasing training opportunities for students and expanding enrollment capacity. The latest additions include a Cessna 172S G1000 and a Schweizer 300 helicopter, further solidifying Fairmont State’s position as the leading Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 141 flight program in the state. This designation means the program is characterized by structured curriculum, qualified instructors, and is overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration, to ensure compliance with all federal requirements.

The expansion of the University’s fleet will allow students to log additional flight hours, providing enhanced hands-on training and experience. The newly leased Schweizer 300 helicopter introduces rotary wing flight to the curriculum, enabling students to obtain their rotary pilot license. This is a valuable credential in the aviation industry, opening doors to careers in emergency response, commercial transport, and military aviation.

“The growth of Fairmont State’s Aviation program demonstrates our commitment to economic growth and workforce development,” said Fairmont State University President Mike Davis. “By expanding our fleet and introducing new educational opportunities, we are both enhancing the student experience and strengthening West Virginia’s aviation industry. I am excited to see our program continue to soar as the leader in shaping the future of aviation in our region.”

Looking ahead, Fairmont State expects to acquire an additional fixed-wing aircraft by fall 2025 and another by late 2026. These purchases were made possible thanks to support from then-Governor (now U.S. Senator) Jim Justice and will further expand opportunities for students seeking aviation careers.

“Our selective flight program continues to lead the way in every aspect of aviation training in West Virginia,” said Joel Kirk, Director of Fairmont State’s Aviation Center of Excellence. “The addition of these new aircraft expands our capacity for fixed wing instruction and introduces unrestricted rotary-wing training—another first for both our program and the state. As West Virginia’s first, most affordable, and most effective CFR Part 141 university program, we remain committed to preparing the next generation of skilled pilots.

The growth of Fairmont State’s flight program comes at a crucial time, as the aviation industry faces a significant pilot shortage. By expanding its fleet and educational capabilities, the University is directly contributing to the state’s economy and workforce development by preparing the next generation of skilled pilots. Fairmont State has long been a pioneer in flight education in West Virginia, and this investment reinforces its commitment to producing highly trained aviation professionals.
