Smeltdown II: Fall iron pour features two days of events

Faculty, students, and artists from across the region will convene on Fairmont State University campus to experience “Smeltdown II: the Smelting,” two days of collaborative cast iron art and technology.

The events will take place on Friday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 14. The Artist-in-Residence for the fall semester, Matt Forrest of Georgia College State University, will begin Friday’s events with the opening of his exhibition in the JD Brooks Gallery with an artist lecture and reception in the Library MMA at 5 p.m. The Tower Room Gallery will also be open, featuring cast iron work from around the region. Following these exhibitions will be a student cupola performance, showcasing a student-designed, built and operated furnace. This performance will be held at 7 p.m. at the gravel lot next to the Duvall-Rosier Field.

Saturday’s main event will be the production pour. Teams from Fairmont State, West Virginia University, Marshall University, Shepherd University, the Rivers of Steel Arts, and more will be featured. This production is a cast iron process where the teams break up and melt down scrap iron in a custom built furnace. This event will be held at 1 p.m. at the gravel lot next to the Duvall-Rosier Field.
