All campuses of Fairmont State University will return to regular operations on Wednesday, January 28.
Supervisors and faculty are asked to exercise maximum flexibility regarding remote work, to ensure the continued safety of those impacted by the storm. Please consult with faculty or supervisors if you are unable to safely return to campus.
Operational updates follow:
The Weather Committee continues monitoring the impact of Winter Storm Fern. If additional updates are necessary, they will be communicated in a timely manner through our emergency alert system, email, social media, and the University website.
Note that due to this weather system, we anticipate the top deck of the parking garage will remain closed for the coming days. (This location accounts for a significant portion of winter slip, trip, and fall injuries on campus. To support the integrity of the structure, salt or other ice melting agents cannot be used. Structural deterioration from de-icers can lead to major repairs costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.) The University will alert motorists via large yellow signs posted at the traffic circle, near Turley Center, and at the top of the hill.

All tutors are trained in a variety of topics related to tutoring including ethics, active listening, and learning strategies. Tutors work with students to understand course concepts and develop skills to be successful in a course. Tutors DO NOT help students with exams or quizzes. Further, tutors do not DO homework for students; rather, they help students become self-sufficient to complete the homework themselves.
Visit EAB Navigate and enter the student's name in "Quick Search." You will then be able to view their visits in the History tab.
For more information on visits or how to run a report on all of your students, email navigate@fairmontstate.edu.
We have two versions of our recommended syllabus language below. You are welcome to edit it to suit your course's needs:
The LEAD Center: The Learning Enrichment and Academic Development Center (LEAD) is located on the second floor of the library and provides students with free support resources, including learning assistance in a wide range of courses. The LEAD Center opens no later than the second week of classes. Assistance is primarily offered by appointment, though drop-ins are accepted as well. Appointments can be booked via EAB Navigate. To see more information on services, hours, or a list of current workshops, visit the LEAD Center webpage. You may also contact the coordinator at lead@fairmontstate.edu.
Absolutely! We believe all students should visit The LEAD Center. We encourage faculty to either walk students over to introduce them to the LEAD Center or invite us to their classroom for a short class visit to overview services. The circulation desk on the first floor of the library also offers tours that include a brief visit to the LEAD Center!
Further, if you feel there is a student who would particularly benefit, we can reach out to them with targeted information. You can open a Case for a student in Navigate. This will allow LEAD Center staff, professors, advisors, and other interested parties to stay up-to-date on any student at risk.
For questions about Cases, contact navigate@fairmontstate.edu.
We prefer that you incentivize visits as we find required visits are often unproductive for the learning process and overall academic wellbeing. However, if incentives include extra credit for a course, Navigate offers features to allow faculty to verify if a student has attended a tutoring session. Tutors will NOT reach out directly to faculty to ensure that a student has attended a session. For more information about accessing this tool in Navigate, please refer to the “How can I verify a student has met with a tutor?" section of the FAQs.
All tutors are required to visit at least one class each semester to talk about tutoring and how to book appointments. Professors can also request that a tutor visits their class by emailing lead@fairmontstate.edu.
We are always looking to expand our team! Students are hired year-round as tutors graduate in both the spring and fall semesters. Visit Become a LEADer! for information.
All students who have been provided accommodations through Accessibility Services are able to test in the LEAD Testing Center when proctors are available. Tests can be scheduled by the student through Accommodate and must be scheduled three business days prior to the test date. Once the student has scheduled, instructors should receive an email requesting confirmation. Instructors must also upload any pertinent information for the test (a copy of paper exams, retrieval method, allowed materials, etc.) 24 hours before the exam.
No, the LEAD Center does not offer make-up testing at this time. The LEAD Center does offer testing for students with accommodations if instructors are unable to provide accommodations for the student.
