Student Government Sponsors Event to Honor Veterans

Nov 04, 2004

Fairmont State's Student Government is sponsoring a Veterans Day Deployment Ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the lawn in front of the Education Building on the main FS campus.

During the ceremony, three FS students who are also U.S. Marines who have been recently assigned to active duty will be honored. The three students Cpl. Oscar Aguilera, Lance Cpl. Nathan Carpenter and Lance Cpl. James Riffle expect to be deployed overseas in January.

"The Fairmont State campus and the Fairmont community need a time and a place to say thank you to those who are serving their country and for the families of veterans to be able to talk, share stories and grieve," said Student Government Director of Public Relations Sandra Ramirez-Clavijo, a sophomore at FS and a four-year U.S. Army veteran.

"We want to honor our veterans, especially our fellow students, who have chosen to temporarily pause their civilian lives for service to their country."

Speakers for the event will include the following: Emily Narog, Student Government President; FSU President Daniel J. Bradley; Cpl. Oscar Aguilera; Linda Collins, the mother of Addie Collins, who is currently deployed; and local veteran Horace Belmear.
