Fairmont State University to host inaugural professional development day for high school counselors
Fairmont State University will host its inaugural West Virginia High School Counselor Day on campus Tuesday, September 13 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The event will provide free professional development and networking opportunities for high school counselors throughout the state.
The informational event will highlight various aspects of the college search and planning process including areas such as financial aid and FAFSA, admissions, higher education technology platforms, current updates on student health and wellness initiatives, among others. Representatives from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, Marion County Superintendent Dr. Donna Hage and the Fairmont State University Academic Deans will offer development sessions with counselors throughout the day.
Fairmont State University Assistant Vice President of Enrollment and Student Life, Alicia Kalka, explained that Admissions and Recruiting visits in high schools throughout the last year have presented the need to introduce professional development initiatives to aid counselors working with high schools students who are engaging in the college admissions process.
“After our road tour this year, we encountered many guidance counselors across the state that are seeking professional development opportunities,” Kalka said. “We know the COVID-19 pandemic has presented many hardships for educators, and we are excited to give back to the state in this capacity.”
All counselors employed at West Virginia high schools are encouraged to attend. Housing accommodations for attendees will be offered at Pence Hall on campus for $25. Those in attendance may also receive a discounted rate at the Holiday Inn in Fairmont.
