Faculty collaboration results in musical publication

Feb 26, 2019

The Fairmont State University Department of Music is proud to announce that Dr. Daniel Eichenbaum, Associate Professor of Music, has released a publication of his composition, “Pacific”, by Trevco Music Publishing. “Pacific”, was commissioned and premiered by the PEN Trio and is a collaboration with Fairmont State Professor of English, Elizabeth Savage, whose poem of the same name inspired the piece.

Of the piece, Dr. Eichenbaum writes, “Pacific incorporates the composer’s own field recordings of the Pacific Ocean along with recorded narration of the poem.  Filtering and manipulation of the ocean sounds create the pitch, melodic lines, and harmonies of the electronic.  Much of the poem’s text is intentionally muffled and concealed in the fixed media part by the sound of the ocean.  Instead, the natural cadence and rhythms from the narrator create the rhythms from which the live wind trio performs.  The poem, then, lives through the trio’s performance of these rhythms.”

Anyone interested in viewing the publication may visit Trevco Music Publishing. Anyone interested in hearing a recording of the piece, may visit SoundCloud.
