Fairmont State transitions open house event to week of campus information sessions

May 07, 2020

Fairmont State University will host future Falcons and their families for Maroon and White Week, the University’s spring virtual open house, May 11-15.

The event is traditionally held on campus in the fall and the spring, but with the pandemic and resulting campus closure, the event is moving online.

The event is for students of all ages and their families who are deciding where to continue their education. Maroon and White Week is an opportunity for prospective students to check out Fairmont State and its more than 90 fields of study. To register for the event, visit

“With so much of the college search and application process disrupted this year due to the pandemic, we wanted to continue to provide students and their families the opportunity to engage with University faculty and staff but in a new way,” said Chris Sharps, Sr. Director of Recruitment. “One of the biggest reasons we hear from students and parents alike as to why they chose Fairmont State is small class sizes and direct contact with their teacher-mentors. Our classes aren’t filled with hundreds of students – the professors know their students by name.”

There will be sessions every day, Monday through Friday. All of the University’s schools and colleges will host presentations, in addition to the University’s Honors Program, and Army and Air Force ROTC representatives. There will be two opportunities for prospective students and their parents to attend financial aid, housing, and admissions presentations – Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m.

“While we won’t be offering our traditional campus walking tours, our campus tour video is available on our website at,” said Sharps. “Also on that site, students and parents can sign up for virtual appointments with an admissions counselor to go further in depth with questions about majors, programs, campus life, as well as the application process.”

It isn’t too late for this year’s high school seniors to apply or for adult students who are seeking the opportunity to jump-start their career by going back to college full-time or part-time. Now more than ever, employers are seeking highly trained and qualified employees. Aside from the lifetime earning potential increase that a college degree provides, a college education also offers career mobility.

“Fairmont State is truly a place where personal attention and friendly support go hand-in-hand with opportunity,” President Mirta M. Martin said. “We transform students’ passion and hard work into excellence in a vibrant, close-knit campus community. We make this promise to students: If they bring a willingness and a determination to pursue their dreams, we will provide them with everything they need to achieve them.”

Fairmont State University’s cozy, tree-filled hilltop campus is located in Fairmont, along the state’s growing high technology corridor. Fairmont State is a comprehensive, student-centered, state-supported institution offering 41 degree programs and over 90 programs of study in the arts and sciences, engineering and technology, teacher education, nursing, and business administration. The institution is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
