College of Science & Technology Assists Operation Welcome Home

The Fairmont State University College of Science & Technology used its high technology equipment in support of Operation Welcome Home’s Golf Scramble on Friday, Oct. 18, at Lakeview Resort in Morgantown.

Dr. Anthony Gilberti, Dean of the College of Science and Technology, and Dennis Mitchell, Academic Lab Manager, designed and created 3D composite and wood plaque combinations and donated them to Operation Welcome Home to be used as first, second and third place awards for the winners in each golf tournament category.

A rapid prototyper that allows the use of CAD software and a 3D printer were used to design and produce a 3D version of the award numbers and name of the golf scramble. A computerized, numerically controlled woodcarver was used to produce a 3D version of the Operation Welcome Home logo. The two pieces were combined to serve as the individual awards for the tournament. Wood plaques also were created.

According to its web site at http://www.veteransoncall.com/operation-welcome-home, Operation Welcome Home is a program “for veterans by veterans” and aims to alleviate common barriers to services and employment faced by veterans who have selflessly served their country.
