Week of Events Planned for Homecoming 2009, Oct. 5-10

Oct 01, 2009

With the theme, "Expedition Around the World," Fairmont State University's and Pierpont Community & Technical College's Homecoming 2009, set for Oct. 5-10, will be a week packed with alumni, athletics, student and community events.

"Students are very excited about Homecoming this year. We have many clubs participating, and many clubs will be represented on the Homecoming court. We would love to have the community come out to our events, including the new International Expo and Cuisines and Customs contest and the traditional parade downtown," said Jane Ryan, Student Government Vice President.

Student Government also continues its tradition of a community service project as part of Homecoming activities.

"The Student Government members in 2002 decided that all of the student organizations who were sponsoring King and Queen candidates should also perform some kind of community service. This tradition has become a hallmark of the Homecoming student activities. This year's project will benefit Global Links, a non-profit agency providing assistance to developing countries. According to Global Links, $300 to $500 will fund one hospital in a developing country for an entire year," said Laurie Johnston, Director of Student Activities.

Those who would like to participate in the service project may donate money, personal care items or new mother baby items to Global Links on Wednesday and Friday, Oct. 7 and 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Falcon Center Main Street commons area.

"We like to include at least one new event each year where we can invite our community members to campus in order to connect our current students with the people who have helped support our institutions throughout the years," Johnston said.

In keeping with the international travel Homecoming theme, Student Government is hosting an International Expo with a Customs and Cuisines Contest, which is open to the public. Student Organizations, as well as individuals and businesses from the area, are asked to sponsor a booth where they will highlight the various regions and cultures from around the world. There will be contests to select the best foods and the customs being taught to the participants.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a booth should click here for a registration form. The cost for sponsoring a booth is $5, and the proceeds will benefit Global Links. Admission to the event is free.
