Collegiate Singers Present Holiday Concert

Nov 19, 2004

The Fairmont State Collegiate Singers under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Poland, accompanied by Dr. Mary Lynne Bennett, will perform a holiday concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Colebank Hall on the main FS campus.

In a medley of traditional favorites, including a few with audience participation, the choir will sing "A Christmas Garland" arranged by Conrad Susa. The garland is woven around popular verses of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," "I Saw Three Ships," "We Three Kings," The Coventry Carol" and "Joy to the World." These songs are contrasted by compositions with Latin texts for the Christmas holiday: "Resonent in Laudibus" by Stroope, "Virga Jesse" by Bruckner and an "Ave Maria" by Busto.

The Chamber Choir will perform modern settings of new and ancient poems, as well as familiar tunes such as Alice Parker's setting of "Fum, Fum, Fum," and John Rutter's music for Christina Rossetti's words, "Love Came Down at Christmas." Chamber Choir includes a rhythmic and challenging version of "Glory to God in the Highest" by the respected American composer Randall Thompson and other selections.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call (304) 367-4219.
