Jacqueline L. Sikora joins Fairmont State University as first ever General Counsel

Nov 16, 2018

Fairmont State University welcomes Jacqueline L. Sikora as its first ever General Counsel, where she will aid the institution in any matters requiring legal guidance.

Sikora is a  graduate of West Virginia University where she earned an undergraduate degree from the P.I. Reed School of Journalism and then, in 2003, graduated from the WVU College of Law. Since then Sikora has served as a law clerk for two Circuit Court judges, and worked for both small and large law firms before transitioning into higher education.

Sikora is enthusiastic about working to help further the mission of the institution to provide quality education to students.

“I’m excited to be joining Fairmont State because this is an exciting time to be a part of this University,” she said. “This role allows me to continue in higher education but expands my responsibilities and opportunities.”

President Dr. Mirta Martin said Fairmont State is very fortunate to be able to welcome home such an extraordinary professional.

“Her knowledge and experience will provide invaluable expertise to the University and its people,” she said.

Sikora comes from West Virginia University but has had a variety of experience through her legal career.

“Prior to entering Higher Education, my practice included education based law,” Sikora said. “I have also focused my practice in employment based law, it’s generally been my practice since I graduated. So, higher education was a logical transition for me.”

In her role at West Virginia University, Sikora served as an Attorney for Students in the Student Legal Services Department, and as a Senior Investigator for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  As a Senior Investigator, Sikora investigated Title IX and Title VII based allegations regarding student and employee conduct.

“I worked regularly with the Employee Relations Department as well as the Provost’s Office, Student Conduct and General Counsel,” Sikora said. “While I was at WVU, I also contributed to revising and revamping the policies that center around Title IX and VII.”
