International English Honorary, Sigma Tau Delta, inducts six new student members
Six students were inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary, at the Folklife Center on Sunday, September 9 at 2 p.m., according to Dr. James Matthews, Professor of English.
Taylor A. Crawford, Jordan N. Gray, Kristen Rae Hill, Laura Morris, Joyanna N. Poe, and Nita M. Richards joined the Beta Omega Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, promising to advance the study of literary masterpieces, to encourage worthwhile reading, to promote the mastery of written expression, and to foster a spirit of fellowship among those who study English.
Crawford, a senior English major from Buckhannon, said, “I am both overjoyed and grateful to have been chosen as an inductee for Fairmont State University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. As a member, I look forward to a lifetime of sharing my love of English with others.”
Gray, also an English major, is from Wheeling. She is a member of the University Honors Program.
Hill, a native of Walker, is a senior and an Honors student. She commented, “I feel honored and excited to be an inductee of Sigma Tau Delta, and I look forward to sharing in this celebration of literary studies with my peers.”
Morris is double majoring in English and Spanish. A member of the Honors Program, she is from Fairmont. At the induction, Morris reflected, “I’m very proud of my fellow inductees and myself for becoming members of Sigma Tau Delta! It was wonderful to celebrate this accomplishment with people who share my love for academics and literature.”
Poe, also from Fairmont and a member of the Honors Program, is majoring in English Education.
A native of Idamay, Richards is an English major. She said, “It is such a wonderful surprise and an honor to be a part of something so prestigious. I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity.”
Dr. Angela Schwer, chair of the Department of Language and Literature and professor of English, praised the students, saying, “Fairmont State has a long history of excellence in the literary arts, and our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta has been active on campus for over 50 years. We take great pride in honoring our best students in this way, and look forward to their further achievements.”
Matthews remarked, “It is always a pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments of our students whose work reminds us of the joy of our work at Fairmont State.”
Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society for students at accredited colleges and universities that grant baccalaureate or higher degrees, was established in 1924 to confer distinction for high achievement in English language, literature, and writing. It is dedicated to fostering literacy and all aspects of the discipline of English.
