Fairmont State University to hold Faculty Recital Concert April 14

Apr 11, 2023Events

Fairmont State University Performing and Community Arts faculty members Dr. Alyssa Schwartz, Director of Bands, and John Morrison, Director of Choirs, are presenting a joint faculty recital on Friday, April 14, from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in Fairmont State's Wallman Hall Theater. The concert will include works for solo flute, solo piano, and pieces and is free to attend and open to the public.

"We are excited to share a well-rounded and challenging repertoire for flute and piano with our university students and broader Fairmont community," said Schwartz.

Morrison and Schwartz will perform a recital of selected musical works for both flute and piano. Composers to be performed include Chopin, Beethoven, Hindemith, and Briccaldi. Morrison and Schwartz are playing two pieces together. One piece is a flute solo Dr. Schwartz performed recently with the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra. The piece has been rewritten for flute and piano.

"It is a joy to collaborate with my colleague in the Music Department, Director of Bands Dr. Alyssa Schwartz, and to bring live concerts to the Wallman Hall Theatre stage," said Morrison. "We look forward to sharing this energetic and varied program of Romantic Era, 20th and 21st century works for solo piano, solo flute, and flute-piano duo with the Fairmont State University community and the public."

Morrison has been an Assistant Professor of Music at Fairmont State since the Fall of 2012. He has been the accompanist of the Collegiate Singers since the Fall of 2006, and Director of Choirs since 2021. Morrison was recently awarded the WVMTA West Virginia Music Teachers Association 2022 Distinguished Leader of the Year. He led the Collegiate Singers' members on a trip to Charleston to perform the Mozart Requiem with the West Virginia Symphony along with other choirs from across the state last Spring.

Schwartz is a professional musician with an impressive and active list of performances. She has served as Director of Bands for Fairmont State since 2021. Dr. Schwartz led the Fairmont State Bands in March at their debut at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Fairmont State University urges the campus and community to join in on an evening full of live music that showcases the talents of Fairmont State's music faculty.
