Musick Library Hosts Welcome Weekend Hubbub Aug. 22

Aug 20, 2010

You might think libraries are supposed to be quiet places, but the Ruth Ann Musick Library is hoping for a noisy crowd this weekend.

To welcome new students to Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, the Ruth Ann Musick Library has planned a Welcome Weekend Hubbub on Sunday, Aug. 22, featuring music from the Davisson Brothers Band, food and prizes. The event theme is "Putting My Best Foot Forward @ the Library."

"I think it is important to focus on the Library as an academic support service for the institutions and to make students feel welcome here," said Thelma Hutchins, Director of Library Services. "We want the Library to be students' first stop for information and to know we're here to help them in any way possible."

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, the library will host the Davisson Brothers Band on the plaza by the building entrance. The popular band offers a "remarkable blend of country, southern rock and bluegrass to create a distinctive sound," according to the web site http://www.davissonbrothersband.com/. Pizza and an ice cream sundae bar will be served from 2 to 4 p.m.

New students who attend the Hubbub are eligible for a drawing for three grand prizes - a free semester of in-state tuition, a free semester of textbooks or an Apple iPad. Fifty gift bags, including limited edition Library T-shirts, 4 GB flash drives, headphones and school supplies, will be awarded as the prizes for a scavenger hunt through the Library. Nationally-recognized psychic Donna Sims will give 10 psychic readings at the event, and those readings will be awarded as just some of the many door prizes available. The prizes are made possible by funding from the Office of Student Affairs.

Members of student organizations including the Fighting Falcons football team, Chi Alpha, Student Government and the Freshmen Counselors have volunteered to run a variety of lawn games.

"This event provides an opportunity for us to start conversations that will help us establish relationships with the incoming group of students, so they feel comfortable asking us questions later in the semester if they need assistance," said Charley Hively, Coordinator of Reference and Instructional Services.
