In October 2018, Victoria Grace was celebrated as the first woman to complete her Private Pilot Single Engine Land Rating through Fairmont State University’s flight program. Grace went on to be the first woman to graduate from the aviation program and then became their first female flight instructor.
At many universities, students often spend their undergraduate careers dipping their toes into the world of academic research, with limited opportunities to present their findings before graduation. At Fairmont State, however, students can do research from day one, and many are given opportunities to present their findings alongside faculty experts at professional conferences around the world.
Fairmont State University President Mike Davis has selected two new vice presidents to join his executive leadership team, marking a significant step for the institution. Fairmont State University received $6,890,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) through the offices of United States Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin. The funding will support upgrades to the nursing program facilities, renovations to the library, and improvements to campus security systems.

Fairmont State University’s College of Science and Technology has been awarded $2,000 in grant funding from the NASA WV Space Grant Consortium (WVSG): Support for Student Organizations and Higher Education Student Projects in STEM. Fairmont State University’s chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society returned from the annual Alpha Phi Sigma conference with 11 wins, including a first place win in the crime scene competition. Fairmont State University’s Community Health Promotion program has entered into an articulation agreement with Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s (BRCTC) Criminal Justice program.This agreement will help BRCTC criminal justice graduates expand their education through a simplified transfer process and allow them to better their careers and communities.
With the recent FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) delays across the United States, Fairmont State University has identified a need to adjust the deadline for institutional scholarship applications and offer additional financial aid to new incoming students. The original scholarship application deadline of April 1 has been extended to August 1, 2024. This will allow those experiencing FAFSA delays more time to apply for the many scholarship opportunities offered at Fairmont State.
Over 900 Fairmont State University baccalaureate students have been honored for their academic achievements throughout the spring 2024 semester.
Twenty students from West Virginia high schools have been selected to participate in this year’s Datha and Gene Smith Fellowship program. The exclusive fellowship program was developed to assist first-generation college students with their transition from high school to college. Unlike scholarships, fellowships provide long-term support, rather than one-time financial disbursement.
