Fairmont State University now offering fully online option for its Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program

Fairmont State University is now offering its Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program in a fully online format, alongside the traditional on-campus option. This new delivery method provides the same academic excellence and personalized mentorship that have defined the program’s 40‑year legacy — all in a format tailored to non‑traditional, working, and place‑bound students.
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen a growing demand for online course offerings as students seek greater flexibility to balance their studies with work, family, and other commitments. This new option significantly enhances our ability to support students who desire that extra flexibility,” said Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Joshua Smallridge.
Fairmont State’s Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice features a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum designed to prepare students for a wide range of criminal justice careers. Coursework includes topics such as cybercrime, criminal procedure, victimology, ethics, criminology, and evaluation of the justice system. These classes are designed not only to provide a strong academic foundation but also to develop critical thinking and practical skills necessary for success in the field.
“Our dedicated faculty are not only experts in the field but also deeply committed to being responsive and accessible, ensuring every student feels supported and empowered throughout their academic journey,” said Smallridge. “This support is one key element that sets our Online Criminal Justice program apart. In our program, students aren’t just names on a roster — they are known, supported, and mentored by faculty who are deeply invested in their success. Another highlight is that our program is multidisciplinary in nature, allowing students to take elective classes from a wide variety of subject areas to tailor their coursework to their goals and interests.”
This program empowers students to pursue careers in law enforcement, corrections, probation, homeland security, and federal intelligence agencies. Graduates may also choose to enter private security, advance within their current organizations, or continue to graduate school or law school.
The fully online and asynchronous format allows students to complete coursework from anywhere in the U.S., making it ideal for those balancing work, family, or irregular schedules. This level of flexibility means students can earn their degree without putting their lives on hold.
Despite being fully online, the program maintains Fairmont State’s tradition of close faculty mentorship. With small class sizes and dedicated instructors, students receive individualized academic guidance and support throughout their journey. In addition, the curriculum includes opportunities to customize electives, allowing students to tailor their education to align with specific career goals or personal interests.
Aligned with Fairmont State’s vision of being a Great Place to Learn, the online Criminal Justice degree demonstrates the University's adaptability — meeting students where they are and supporting them without major disruptions to work or family commitments. The institution's commitment to affordable, accessible, and flexible learning makes pursuing career goals more attainable than ever.
