Impact Scholarship Created in Memory of Regina Sue Dulin DeMary

Jul 11, 2016

The family of Fairmont State Nursing alumna Regina Sue Dulin DeMary has established an Impact Scholarship in her memory through the Fairmont State Foundation.

A retired registered nurse and 1966 graduate of Fairmont State, Sue DeMary passed away in April 2016, survived by her husband John DeMary, who made a generous donation to the Foundation in her memory to create the scholarship. The Regina Sue Dulin DeMary Scholarship will aid a Nursing undergraduate student, who is preferably a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each academic year.

“Fairmont State University is grateful to John DeMary for his support of nursing students by memorializing his wife through an Impact Scholarship,” said RJ Gimbl, President of the Fairmont State Foundation. “Impact Scholarships provide an immediate award to students.”

Sue DeMary was born in 1932 in Webster County. Her family faced difficult times after her father died in a timbering accident when she was 4 years old, leaving her mother alone to raise five children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade, and the family moved to Fairmont where DeMary finished high school.

DeMary and her first husband, William Dulin Jr., had three children. He worked as a miner, and she worked at jobs including a clerical position at the Times newspaper and as a glass worker at the Owens Illinois plant. According to her family, she and her husband always advocated education for their children as a way to get ahead and provide for themselves, so she decided to take her own advice and enroll in the new Nursing program at Fairmont State College (now University). In 1966, DeMary graduated as a member of Fairmont State’s first Nursing program, while working part-time and raising her children.

During her career, she worked as a nurse in Fairmont; Ashland, Ky.; and Lakeland, Fla. After years of experience, she worked in nursing homes in positions including Director of Nursing and ended her career with AMFM Nursing Homes as a Quality Improvement Coordinator. She was a member of the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration.

After her 1997 retirement, she married her second husband, John DeMary, and settled in Rivesville, where she enjoyed bowling, gardening, bird watching and family gatherings. She was a member of Rivesville United Methodist Church.
