International Festival 2013 Kicks Off on April 15

As part of International Festival 2013, Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will celebrate global culture on campus.

Planned for Monday, April 15, through Thursday, April 18, the weeklong festival is organized by the Office of International Student Services with the participation of the International Education Committee, International Student Organization and Study Abroad Program, along with the sponsorship by FSU President Maria Rose and Student Government.

“The purpose of the events is to appreciate the internationalization of our campus community and to celebrate the diversity as a collaborative effort between Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College,” said Dr. Tadashi Kato, International Programming Coordinator through the Office of International Student Services.

An International Film Show will kick off the weeklong event at 6 p.m. Monday, April 15, in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library. The film is “UN HOMME QUI CRIE - A SCREAMING MAN” by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (2010). The event is co-sponsored by the International Education Committee and the Study Abroad program. Additional international films will be available for check out on DVD at the Ruth Ann Musick Library throughout International Week. Several selections recommended by the International Education Committee are featured near the circulation desk and also on the Library's social media outlets.

Tastes of the World is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, on the second floor Main Street area of the Falcon Center. International students will offer free samples of foods from their countries. The event is organized by the International Student Organization and sponsored by Student Government.

An International Flag Raising Ceremony is planned for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the flag poles at the Bryant Street entrance to campus. International flags will be raised to honor the countries represented with students attending FSU and Pierpont. The event is organized by the Office of International Student Services.

On Thursday, April 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1 & 2 on the third floor of the Falcon Center, there will be Global Forum that features students who studied in Paris as presenters. This event is organized by the Study Abroad Program.

On the same evening, An International Night of Stage Performances will conclude the celebration. Planned for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in Colebank Hall Gym, the stage presentation of international dance, music and martial arts will feature Indian Bollywood and Kathak dance, Middle-Eastern dance, hoop dance, Venezuelan harp, Japanese and Chinese martial arts and more. An exhibition will showcase displays by international countries. Admission is free and open to the public. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. The event is organized by the Office of International Student Services with the participation of International Student Organization.
