International Education Week 2013 Kicks Off on Nov. 18

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will participate in the nationally recognized International Education Week with events intended to celebrate internationalization and diversity.

Planned for the week of Nov. 18, International Education Week is sponsored by the Office of International Student Services and co-organized by the International Education Committee. Residence Life participates as a co-sponsor for the International Exhibition on Nov. 20 and the International Student Organization also will participate in the International Exhibition and International Poetry Night.

“The purpose of the events is to promote the international education of our campus and to further celebrate the internationalization and diversity of our community,” said Dr. Tadashi Kato, International Programming Coordinator through the Office of International Student Services and the Chair of International Education Committee.

On Monday, Nov. 18, there will be an International Poetry Night in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., coordinated by Dr. Matthew Hokom and Dr. Suzanne Heagy. International poems will be read both in native languages and in English translation.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, an International Flag Raising Ceremony is planned for 12:30 p.m. at the flag poles at the Bryant Street entrance to campus. International flags will be raised to honor the countries represented with FSU and Pierpont students, followed by a speech by the FSU Provost, Dr. Christina Lavorata.

Also, on Tuesday, Nov. 19, an international film, “Dreams of Dust” (Laurent Salgues, Burkina Faso, 2006) will be shown in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m., coordinated by Dr. Erin Hippolyte.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, an International Exhibition will take place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Gym 1 of the Falcon Center. The event includes cultural displays from all over the world, information booths for language programs and study abroad programs and international video shows. A ballroom dance demonstration will be on stage at noon, followed by a speech by the FSU Provost Lavorata. A prize drawing at 2:30 p.m. will conclude the exhibition.

Finally, on Thursday, Nov. 21, there will be a Global Forum in Falcon Center Board Room from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., moderated by Dr. Erin Hippolyte, the Study Abroad Program Coordinator.
