Fairmont State University announced its new Access Scholarship on Monday, a program that will provide new full-time, in-state students with free tuition if their family income is below $70,000. Fairmont State President Dr. Mike Davis told WV News that the scholarship was put in place to make higher education more attainable for West Virginians who need it most.
After more than a year of listening sessions, discussions, planning and replanning, Fairmont State University has finished its strategic vision for the next decade, which centers on the university being a great place to learn, work and call home.
A law allowing concealed carry permit holders to carry a firearm onto the campus of any of the state’s higher education institutions goes into effect July 1.

Fairmont State University officially inaugurated its 27th president, Mike Davis on Thursday after he officially stepped into the role in July 2023.
Fairmont State University inaugurated its new president Thursday. Mike Davis has held the position since last July, but he was formally invested as president Thursday evening, formally conferring the authority and symbols of the office to him.
In the nine months since taking office as president, Dr. Davis said the community has been helpful and accommodating to him and his family. Davis said the outpouring of support has included personal invitations to people’s homes, cheat sheets on important community facts, dinner reservations. It’s a feeling of belonging that Davis has appreciated the most.
Fairmont State President Dr. Mike Davis and a delegation of students, faculty and staff visited the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston on January 29. During the visit House representatives, senators and even Governor Jim Justice met with those visiting from the University to discuss important initiatives Fairmont State is taking for students and the community. To commemorate the day, January 29, 2024 was officially recognized as Fairmont State University Day at the West Virginia Legislature by the House and Senate.
