Two Fairmont State Students Chosen as Spirit Week Royalty

Mar 26, 2021

Last week, Fairmont State University held its inaugural Spirit Week celebration, marked by social media challenges, a community service project and wellness initiatives.

“The Spirit Week initiative was a way to boost campus morale and bring the Falcon Family together,” said Evan Fossen, Assistant Director of Student Life. “It gave us a chance to celebrate our campus community which has shown tremendous strength and resilience this past year.”

The week-long event culminated in two students, Asia-Lynn Cooper and Erica Lawrence, being voted Spirit Week Royalty by their peers.

Fairmont State President Mirta M. Martin offered her congratulations to the first-ever Spirit Week Royalty. “We have a such a supportive, tight community here at Fairmont State,” Martin said. “Spirit Week is a chance for us to have fun while we demonstrate and share our communal spirit.”

Cooper, a junior psychology major from Clendenin, West Virginia, said she was honored to be chosen to represent her fellow Falcons and that she is thankful for the experiences she has been afforded as student.

“I’ve had plenty of opportunities and have made many connections around campus,” she said. “I hope to continue making new friendships, connections and opportunities throughout the rest of my college career.”

On campus, Cooper is heavily involved in student organizations; she is the Vice President of Membership for Theta Sigma of Kappa Kappa Psi, a National Honorary Band Fraternity, and a panel member for Falcons with Pride in addition to serving as a resident assistant.

“Being a part of Falcons with Pride has helped me grow as a person and allows me to help those around me grow,” said Cooper. “I have gained the knowledge and experience of acceptance, self-love and passion for this community.”

For Cooper, Fairmont State has been a living and learning space in which she has felt safe to be herself, and she hopes other Fairmont State students will take the time to find their place within the campus community.

“Do not be afraid to put yourself out there,” she said. “I encourage students to be involved in clubs, student organizations or intramural sports. I have found some of my lifelong friends through being involved.”

Lawrence, a senior education major from Craigsville, West Virginia, transferred to Fairmont State as a sophomore because of the University’s welcoming environment and impactful professors.

“All of my professors have been very helpful and encouraging in my journey,” she said. “Since being at Fairmont State, I have met many diverse people and I have made great connections and been involved in many organizations and activities.”

Among those organizations are Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated as well as the Black Student Union. According to Lawrence, her organizational membership has allowed her to develop meaningful relationships both on and off campus. And as she prepares to graduate this spring, Lawrence has her sight set on following in the footsteps of a very special long-time educator: her mother.

“I have been brought up seeing the education field and knew I wanted to do that as well,” she said. “I enjoy working with children I want to be part of their journey in learning and growing.”
