Whetstone Evening Celebration Set for May 6

May 02, 2012

The annual Whetstone Evening celebration will be from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in the second floor student lounge in the Ruth Ann Musick Library on the main campus.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be provided. Contributors are encouraged to come and read their work, which will be done on a sign-up basis at the event.

Whetstone is the student-produced journal of art and literature at Fairmont State University, but every year the journal invites a professional author and artist to join the ranks of student contributors. This year’s featured author is Sally Rosen Kindred, a Maryland poet, and the featured artist is Melissa May, who is a painter and the Executive Director of Prickett's Fort State Park.

The journal was proud to welcome a new faculty advisor this year, Dr. Suzanne Heagy.

“Being the new faculty advisor to students on the editorial staff of the undergraduate journal Whetstone has been a learning curve. I'm amazed at the number of creative submissions Whetstone receives and the passion that the editorial staff bring to their discussions of aesthetics, poetics, and design. I'm excited about the future of Whetstone and the new students who will join the staff next year, including Chris Vance, who will be the new managing editor,” Heagy said.

This year’s managing editor, Michelle Yost, said: “Managing Whetstone has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I get to experience, react to and celebrate the writing and art of my fellow students. I get to learn the ins and outs of the publication process and meet very talented students. It's not all fun and games. I sing 'Love is a Battlefield' while editing. It requires a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I can't thank Dr. Donna Long and Dr. Suzanne Heagy enough for their support and encouragement. I am very proud to be a part of the creative process.”
