WYK Associates Presents Architecture Awards to FSU
WYK Associates, Inc. of Clarksburg was honored with three Merit Design Awards at the 35th Annual American Institute of Architects-West Virginia Gala in Charleston on April 13. Their work on the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on campus received two Merit Design Awards for Achievement in Architecture: one for overall design and one for interior design.
James B. Swiger, President, AIA NCARB, LEED AP, and William E. Yoke, Jr., AIA NCARB, of WYK Associates, Inc. made a formal presentation of the two awards to Fairmont State University President Maria Rose and Dr. Judy P. Byers, Director of the Folklife Center on April 30.
The Folklife Center is located on the west side of the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College. The Michael Kennedy dairy barn built circa 1903 was converted into the three-story Colonial Apartments in circa 1941. The apartments housed several Fairmont State faculty members, including noted folklorist and author Dr. Ruth Ann Musick. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
After developing an architectural program for the Folklife Center, WYK Associates, Inc., removed a floor from the existing three-floor structure and created a first floor classroom area, as well as a second floor Great Room of Cultures. The Great Room restored the open structure of the barn and provides both exhibit and multi-use space. William E. Yoke Jr., AIA NCARB, served as the project architect for the building.
