The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host two community-focused events in October, both free and open to the public. The first event, a square dance, will take place Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., followed by the launch of a traditional music jam series Friday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host a special performance featuring roots musicians Annick Odom and Aristotle Jones, traditional "crankie" hand-cranked moving storytelling art, and a traditional music jam. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and is free and open to all community members.

Fairmont State University students begin classes on Monday, August 26; however, for faculty and staff, the 2024-2025 academic year began Monday with the University’s annual employee breakfast and Opening Session.
Fairmont State University has received $2,000 through the West Virginia Humanities Council. This grant will be used to curate, promote, and actualize Sand and Fire: 200 Years of West Virginia Glass, a Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center exhibit highlighting how the glass industry led to significant economic development in West Virginia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
One of the most notable events at the Folklife Center is the Wartz ‘n All Dulcimer Jam, held twice a year. The next jam is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, beginning at 10 a.m. This free event is open to the public, inviting everyone to participate by playing or simply enjoying the music. New players can borrow cardboard dulcimers to join in the fun. The day will wrap-up around 3 p.m.
Fairmont State University President Mike Davis has selected two new vice presidents to join his executive leadership team, marking a significant step for the institution. Fairmont State University’s chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society returned from the annual Alpha Phi Sigma conference with 11 wins, including a first place win in the crime scene competition. Chapter president Carissa Russell led her team to a victory in what many consider the conference’s most challenging competition.
Fairmont State University’s Community Health Promotion program has entered into an articulation agreement with Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s (BRCTC) Criminal Justice program.This agreement will help BRCTC criminal justice graduates expand their education through a simplified transfer process and allow them to better their careers and communities.
With the recent FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) delays across the United States, Fairmont State University has identified a need to adjust the deadline for institutional scholarship applications and offer additional financial aid to new incoming students. The original scholarship application deadline of April 1 has been extended to August 1, 2024. This will allow those experiencing FAFSA delays more time to apply for the many scholarship opportunities offered at Fairmont State.
Over 900 Fairmont State University baccalaureate students have been honored for their academic achievements throughout the spring 2024 semester.
