High school students may have noticed a recent trend in the college application process. Post-secondary institutions across the country have begun to place less emphasis on standardized test scores and more on high school GPAs. In many cases, standardized tests are not required at all.
On November 30, Fairmont State welcomed over 100 students to campus for the annual SOAR Awards. The SOAR Awards are a series of events hosted across West Virginia and surrounding areas, where incoming freshmen who attend receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Fairmont State University welcomed 48 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge and 24 FLL Explore robotics teams to campus for the West Virginia State Championship on Saturday, December 2. The FLL Challenge teams are comprised of students ages 9-14 and the FLL Explore teams represent students ages 6-9 from across the state of West Virginia. Around 650 participants, coaches, parents and volunteers attended Saturday’s event.
Fairmont State University hosted a food drive during the Wednesday evening men’s and women’s basketball games. The items donated will go to the local Soup Opera, which recently suffered from a devastating flood that ruined much of its facility.
On November 20, representatives from Fairmont State University collaborated with the Tygart Valley United Way and Pierpont Community and Technical College for their Giving Tree fundraiser. They gathered in the Middletown Commons to decorate a miniature Christmas tree that will be available for auction. All proceeds will benefit the Tygart Valley United Way.

Fairmont State University will welcome 46 LEGO robotics teams to campus for the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) State Championship on Saturday, December 2. The teams are made up of participants ages 9-14 who come from across the state to showcase their research and robotics design skills. Approximately 400 participants are expected at the competition.

Fairmont State University will celebrate its 154th Fall Commencement at the Feaster Center on Saturday, December 9. Commencement will be split into two ceremonies beginning with the College of Education, Health & Human Performance, the College of Nursing and the College of Science & Technology at 10 a.m. After the 10 a.m. ceremony, graduates from the College of Business & Aviation, the College of Liberal Arts and Regents Bachelor of Arts graduates will be recognized at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, December 3 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Fairmont State University will host a Holiday Tea Party for the women of Fairmont State. Women employees and employee partners, as well as university-affiliated community members, will gather at the Shaw House for tea and hors d'oeuvres, and to collect donation items for the women and children at HOPE, Inc.
Fairmont State University will honor its second cohort of Police Academy cadets on Thursday, December 8 at 11:00 a.m. in the Feaster Center. Governor Jim Justice is set to address the newest editions to West Virginia’s law enforcement in person during the ceremony, along with his canine companion Baby Dog.
