Trip to Bountiful' on Stage March 27
Members of the Montana Repertory Company will perform the play "The Trip to Bountiful"
on Fairmont State's campus at 7 p.m. March 27 in the Wallman Hall Theatre.
The performance is sponsored by Fairmont State Student Government. For tickets, call
the Box Office at (304) 367-4240. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $6 for senior
citizens and free for FS students.
"The Trip to Bountiful" by Horton Foote tells the story of Carrie Watts, an elderly
woman who flees the stifling confinement of the city apartment she shares with her
son and daughter-in-law to revisit her hometown in the low farmland of the Texas coast.
There she discovers, amidst the ruin and decay of time's passage, the satisfaction
of a life well-lived and a renewed connection to her past. The play deals with two
topics close to the heart: how to cope with parents as they age, and the existential
tug we all have in our hearts for "home."
Foote came to national prominence with his masterful screenplay for "To Kill a Mockingbird."
His second Oscar came for "Tender Mercies," the story of a washed-up country singer
who finds the inspiration to pull his life back together through the support of a
young widow and her son. "The Trip to Bountiful" won an Oscar for Geraldine Page's
performance. In addition to his Oscars, Foote was awarded the prestigious Pulitzer
Prize for playwriting in 1995 for his play, "The Young Man from Atlanta."
He remains an active playwright, with a production of more than 40 plays and scripts.
He has received numerous awards, including a 2002 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg
New Play Award for "The Carpetbagger's Children."
