Haynes, Martin Honored with Faculty Awards
Fairmont State recently honored Dr. D. Stephen Haynes and Dr. Ashley Martin with Faculty
Recognition Awards.
The awards were presented during a reception Thursday, March 23, in the Falcon Center.
The Faculty Development Committee selects outstanding faculty members each year to
receive the Faculty Recognition Awards. The winners are selected because of their
clear commitment to continuing development in their fields and service to their community.
"In recognizing these two faculty members, we celebrate commitment to the art of
teaching and a passion for learning," said Dr. Daniel Bradley, FSU President. "As
educators, we are dedicated to making sure our students learn and grow. At the same
time, we are constantly searching for ways to continue our own learning and growth
as individuals, as scholars and as teachers."
Dr. D. Stephen Haynes
Haynes joined the Fairmont State faculty in 1970. He earned a Bachelor of Science
in Physics from Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. in Physics from Florida State University.
Haynes has taught General Physics, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Electronics, Special
Problems in Physics, Demonstrations in Physics, Advanced Mechanics, Physical Science
and College Algebra. He has extended his service to students beyond the classroom,
having served as an advisor to Pre-Dental students and to Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship.
He also taught Physics with Fairmont State's Project AMPLE for many years.
Haynes's research activities have included the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Fellowship
to conduct research on the clean burning of coal at the Morgantown Energy and Technology
Center. He has several publications in the field of nuclear physics research.
His service to the university has included membership on several Faculty Senate standing
committees including Admissions and Credits (Chair), Faculty Development, Athletic,
Faculty Personnel, Academic Appeals Board, and the Committee on Committees. He also
represented his school on Faculty Senate. His service on ad-hoc and special committees
has included Academic Vice President Search, Division Chair Search, Legislative Advocacy
(Co-chair), and Promotion and Tenure Guidelines.
Haynes has also been active in the local community. He has been a member of the Board
of Directors for the Prickett's Fort Memorial Foundation since 1988. He had a leading
role in "Prickett's Fort: An American Frontier Musical" for 15 years. He has also
made presentations on frontier history on "Saturday AM Live," and to 4-H clubs, scout
troops and public and home school classes.
He is married to Sarah Faughn Haynes. They have a daughter and a son.
Dr. Ashley Martin
Martin has been a member of the Fairmont State faculty since 1979. He earned a Bachelor
of Science from Memphis State University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.
He has taught almost every course offered by the Physics department, as well as Intermediate
and College Algebra. He has revised and prepared curricula for Introduction to Physics
and Intermediate Algebra, integrating online assessments and resources for WebCT and
Vista. Additionally, he prepared new curriculum for College Algebra, integrating assessments
and resources for Vista, and made them available for all students taking the College
Algebra course. Beyond the classroom, he serves students as the advisor to Pre-Pharmacy
majors and has served as the faculty advisor to the Science Honorary.
Martin's professional achievements include a Faculty Fellowship with the ASEE and
Contract Research for NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center.
He has represented his school on Faculty Senate and has served as vice president
of that body. He has also served on several Senate committees. He has also served
on the Hunt-Haught Hall Facilities Committee and has been the Coordinator of the Physics/Physical
Science program.
Martin is active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks as a member of Grafton
Lodge #308. He has served on every local lodge committee, currently holding the office
of Lodge Secretary. He has spearheaded many initiatives for Taylor County youth, including
Student of the Month programs at Taylor County Middle School and Grafton High School,
a local lodge scholarship, Youth Citizen of the Year and a Christmas "Giant Toy Giveaway."
He has received many local, state and national awards in his tenure with the Elks.
He has been married to his wife Rhonda for 21 years. They have two married sons and
three grandchildren.
