GEAR-UP Recognizes Role Models
The Fairmont State GEAR-UP Partnership Grant is hosting its annual Role Model Recognition
Celebration event from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 31, in Gym 1 at the Falcon Center.
The Role Model Recognition Program honors those who are making a positive difference
in the lives of students. The program was developed to demonstrate the importance
of family involvement and the impact it can have on a student's educational success.
The guest speaker will be Lee Rouson, two-time Super Bowl championship team member
for the New York Giants.
GEAR-UP students nominated individuals who encouraged, supported, inspired, motivated
or influenced them to pursue education beyond high school. A selection committee reviewed
the nominations and has selected those demonstrating the most outstanding contributions
to a student's educational success to receive awards at the Recognition Celebration.
All nominees will receive a certificate of recognition and an invitation to attend
the event.
GEAR-UP is a six-year, federally funded program that aims to significantly increase
the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in education beyond high
school. In 1999, Fairmont State received the largest of 164 partnership grants awarded
throughout the U.S. to serve 47 schools in nine West Virginia counties for six years.
In 2005, the partnership was continued with a new six-year grant, an additional $31
million and an expanded service area including 56 schools in 14 counties.
The Fairmont State GEAR-UP Partnership Grant serves more than 6,500 students and
families in Barbour, Braxton, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Marion,
Monongalia, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker and Upshur counties.
