Homecoming Week Packed with Events

With the theme, "Hollywood on the Hill," Fairmont State's Homecoming 2005 will be a week packed with events including a parade, entertainment and more.

"I am extremely optimistic about Homecoming," said Kera Cherrey, Student Government Vice President. "Student Government members collaborated to pick this year's theme after a member of Student Government suggested an Oscar-Party theme. It was a blast to plan and organize the week's events. I worked hard to schedule events that centered around movie stars, Hollywood and glamour to bring a touch of Hollywood to our Fairmont hills."

The traditional Homecoming Parade will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in downtown Fairmont. Any marching group, organization, community group or business interested in having a float in the parade should call the Office of Student Activities, at (304) 367-4705 by Thursday, Oct. 6. Line-up for the parade will begin at 5:15 p.m. at the corner of Fairmont Avenue and Second Street. Student Government has selected FS student Holly Palmer, Miss Deaf West Virginia, as parade marshal.

The annual Pep Rally will immediately follow the parade at Duvall-Rosier Field. Clubs on campus will compete for the Spirit Stick, as cheerleaders and Marching Band lead the crowd in cheering on the Fighting Falcons. Homecoming court candidates, the football coaches and captains will also be introduced.

The Fighting Falcons take on the University of Charleston for the Homecoming football game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Student Government continues its tradition of a community service project as part of Homecoming Week activities.

"One of the proudest moments I have as the Advisor to Student Government is watching our students get involved in service projects which benefit our local and global communities," said Laurie Johnston, Director of Student Activities.

"Students learn more about the needs and diversity of the people they are helping, as they also learn more about themselves. I think the leaders of the student body, along with all our campus organizations, do an excellent job of leading the efforts of Fairmont State in giving back to its community."

This year, in cooperation with the Fairmont State Bookstore, student organizations are collecting children's books for Marion County Head Start. Non-religious and non-holiday themed books may be dropped off at the Fairmont State Bookstore in the Falcon Center any day during the week.

Student Government is also inviting the children from the Head Start onto campus to participate in some activities. With the help of the FS Bookstore, Student Government will host a story-time with the children during which each child will receive a copy of "Horton Hears a Who" by Dr. Seuss. The children will then have a snack provided and take part in a craft related to the book.

"The Student Government Executive Officers worked with Peggy Frum, manager of the FS Bookstore, to create this new addition to our Homecoming agenda," Cherrey said. "I am so proud that we have decided to extend our community service project this year by providing an actual service to the children of Marion County Head Start."

Hollywood Game Show
The interactive game show features Hollywood trivia, movie facts, along with karaoke and improvisational performances by the participants. There will be door prizes for the winners.

Mega Flix and Freaky Snapshots
This is an interactive booth where students will be able to make their own music video or have photos taken of themselves and their friends digitally added to some exotic and strange backdrops.

Community Service Project: Head Start Children's Book Drive

Non-religious and non-holiday children's books can be dropped off all week at the FS Bookstore in the Falcon Center. The public is invited to participate.
