Application Timeline

Resident Assistant applications open at different points throughout the year depending on staffing needs.

Spring Recruitment (Primary Hiring Period)

Applications for the upcoming academic year are typically available early in the Spring Semester, beginning in February.
This recruitment cycle selects the majority of RAs for the following Fall and Spring semesters.

Mid-Year Recruitment (As Needed)

If positions become available between the Fall and Spring semesters—such as when an RA graduates, studies abroad, or transitions into another leadership position—Residence Life may reopen applications in late October through November.
This allows new hires to complete onboarding and participate in January RA Training before the start of the Spring term.

Additional information about the RA Application process, including specific dates and timelines, will be shared with all residential students through their Fairmont State email and Housing Portal. Students are encouraged to check both regularly for the most up-to-date information and announcements.

Selection Process

The Resident Assistant (RA) selection process is designed to identify student leaders who demonstrate a commitment to community, responsibility, and service. The process provides applicants an opportunity to showcase their leadership skills, communication style, and ability to contribute to a positive residential experience.

  1. Prepare Your Application Materials
Before beginning your application, make sure to have an updated resume highlighting your campus involvement, leadership experiences, and any prior work or volunteer roles that reflect your ability to support others.
  2. Submit Your Application (See above How to Apply section)
  3. Interview Process
Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a multi-step interview process.
    • Individual Interviews: Applicants meet with Residence Life staff to discuss their experiences, leadership approach, and interest in the position.
    • Group Process Experience: Applicants engage in group activities and scenarios that highlight teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  4. Selection and Placement
After interviews, candidates are evaluated based on their application, references, and performance during the selection process.
    • Offers are typically extended several weeks after interviews conclude.
    • Candidates who are selected will receive information about their training schedule, hall placement, and next steps for onboarding.
    • Placement decisions are based on the needs of each residential community and the strengths of the individual candidate.
  5. Alternate Candidate Pool
Applicants who are not immediately selected may be placed in an alternate pool to be considered for future openings during the academic year. Many successful RAs begin their journey through this process.
