Holiday Breaks Impact

Holiday Breaks

Fairmont State University understands that not all students are able to leave campus during scheduled University breaks. While the University closes its offices and most campus services during these periods, Residence Life remains committed to supporting students who may face housing insecurity or other extenuating circumstances.

During these times, residence halls remain available through Break Housing for students who have an approved need to stay on campus.

What to Expect

Break Housing provides access to your assigned room, but campus operations are significantly reduced. Students approved to stay should plan accordingly, as services and staffing will be limited.

Please Note:

  • Dining and food options may be closed or have limited hours.
  • Mail, packages, and deliveries will not be processed until the University reopens.
  • Professional and student staff coverage is limited, though emergency assistance remains available through the Department of Public Safety and On-Call Professional Staff within Residence Life.
  • Students are responsible for maintaining their living space and following all University and residence hall policies during the break period.
  • Students are expected to adhere to all University and residence hall policies, including any temporary modifications in place during break periods. This may include:
    • Visitation restrictions (no guests or limited guest privileges).
    • Extended quiet or courtesy hours to ensure a safe and restful environment for all remaining residents.
    • Adjusted facility access or limitations in community spaces and amenities.

Eligibility and Request Process

Break Housing is designed for students who:

  • Experience hardship or housing insecurity,
  • Have on-campus employment that requires them to remain,
  • Or have other circumstances that prevent them from traveling home.

All students must submit a Residence Hall Break Intent Form by the posted deadline. Generally, requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and approval is not guaranteed. Students who do not receive approval are expected to vacate by the official hall closing date and time.  Additional information about break deadlines and the application process will be emailed in advance to the students email addresses.

Staying Connected

While our operations are reduced, Residence Life remains committed to ensuring students who stay have a safe and secure environment. If you are approved to remain on campus:

  • You will receive confirmation via email with specific check-in and check-out expectations.
  • Emergency and maintenance contacts will be provided in that communication.
