Greek Life: Social Fraternities & Sororities

Greek Life at Fairmont State University

At Fairmont State University we are proud to offer Greek Life - a community or system comprised of select fraternities and sororities. The long-standing terms "fraternity" and "sorority" refer to groups of men and women (respectively) who join together to offer fellowship, academic support, an outlet for philanthropic service to the community and institution, as well as the opportunity to network for future careers. They are referred to as Greek chapters because they are named according to the ancient Greek alphabet. All of our Social Greek chapters at Fairmont State are affiliated with a national organization. Greek Life has a strong and rich tradition at hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, as well as here at Fairmont State. The Greek system offers many opportunities to meet and connect with people, contribute to the community, and develop leadership skills. The academic benefits are significant as well - research indicates that students who are affiliated with a club or organization are more likely to achieve academically and to persist.

Mission & Vision

To create and support an environment where the students of Fairmont State University can enhance their college experience through community, lifelong friendships, scholarship, leadership, and service.

The Greek Life community at Fairmont State University will be a community that is (1) respected, (2) influential, and (3) known for its contributions to the university and local community.

Interested? How to Get Involved

Many chapters regularly have a table in or around the Falcon Center for various outreach efforts where you can chat with them about their organization. Formal Recruitment takes place during a week towards the beginning of the Fall semester. During the Formal Recruitment process, fraternities and sororities host recruitment nights at which you can get to know them better and vice-versa. Bids are later extended to qualifying potential new members whom the organizations feel are the best fit. Some organizations are allowed to participate in Continuous Open Bidding and recruit members throughout the year. The Intake process for our historically Black chapters typically takes place in the Spring semester by invitation.
