What is the Student Government Association?

Student Government Association (SGA) is a campuswide student government that represents all Fairmont State students on campus. It consists of Class Senators who are elected each year to represent Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Graduate students, and a House Representatives. These elected individuals will represent their constituents at weekly meetings (Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.). Meetings are centered around issues and events that involve all Fairmont State students.

What is the purpose of the SGA?

The purpose of the SGA shall be to regulate all matters pertaining to the student life; to promote general activities and develop a sense of collegiate community; to train its members in the principles and practices of democracy; to constitute a medium for expressing the opinion of the student body on matters of general interest; and strengthen the professional and academic relationships existing between the faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The SGA provides several stress-relieving and fun activities where students from across the campus can meet each other, such as Welcome Weekend activities, Homecoming, and much more!

Why Should I Join Student Government?

Student Government is a great way to become involved on campus and in the community. You can help shape school policies and provide needed services to fellow students and the community. Additionally, we have a lot of fun, and it is a great way to get involved! Students involved in student organizations tend to do better in school – It’s a fact!

Who is Eligible?

Students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours this semester. Students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at the time of their nomination unless there is a higher credit hour requirement for the position.

How Can I Get involved?

Students are welcome to participate in all SGA events and attend our weekly meetings. The SGA encourages students to become involved with the issues or with SGA event planning. Meetings are held in 320 Education Building at 12:30 pm. each Thursday during the academic year.

The SGA has several committees that help do the work of the body. These include the Standing Committee on Finance, Committee on Rules, Legislative Affairs, and Civic Engagement, Committee on Senior Campaign, and the Committee on Campus and Community Engagement. Ad hoc committees may be established at the will of the Student Body President such as the Homecoming Committee.
