Who Is a First-Generation Student?

A first-generation college student is a student whose parents or guardians have not completed a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree is often called a four-year degree.

You may be first-generation even if a parent or guardian attended college or earned an associate degree. A sibling attending or graduating from college does not determine your first-generation status.

If you were raised by one parent or a guardian, or your parent earned a degree outside the United States, contact First Gen Falcons for help understanding how Fairmont State defines your status. Financial Aid can answer questions about scholarship eligibility.

On your Fairmont State admission application, identify yourself as a first-generation student when asked about your first-generation status or your parents' or guardians' education. Answer based on your family's circumstances and the application's instructions.

Sharing your status helps us connect you with relevant information, resources, and opportunities as you take your next step.

A separate opportunity for eligible first-generation students.

The Datha & Gene Smith Fellowship & Bridge Program offers eligible first-generation, first-time freshmen a free, immersive college preparation experience and ongoing connections during their time at Fairmont State.

The program offers personal mentorship and advising, financial support and resources, and opportunities to build community through workshops, off-campus events, and social activities.

Who Can Be Considered?

  • West Virginia residents.
  • First-generation, first-time freshmen admitted to Fairmont State.
  • Students with a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Students who have completed the FAFSA and sent it to Fairmont State.

Datha & Gene has its own eligibility and selection process. Identifying as first-generation on your admission application does not automatically enroll you in the fellowship.

Scholarships for First-Generation Students

Some Fairmont State scholarships require first-generation status, while others give preference to first-generation applicants. Requirements vary by scholarship and may include residency, major, class level, GPA, and financial need.

Sharing your first-generation status does not guarantee an award or replace the scholarship application process. Ask Financial Aid about current availability, deadlines, and how to be considered.
