Senior Jamillah (Jamie) Jimenez, a computer science student at Fairmont State University, has been spending her summer gaining valuable career experience as a member of West Virginia University Medicine's Summer 2021 Information Technology Internship class.
The WVU Medicine Information Technology Internship affords junior and senior undergraduate students the opportunity to complete significant and challenging IT work through real-world experience within WVU Medicine. Throughout the 13-week internship, Jimenez is working as a member of the program’s application training and clinical informatics team to assist new and existing WVU Medicine employees with their use of EPIC, an electronic medical charting system.
“Part of offering a transformative educational experience is creating impactful internship opportunities for our students,” said Mirta M. Martin, Fairmont State University President. “Meaningful experiential learning experiences – like the West Virginia University Medicine's Summer 2021 Information Technology Internship class – not only equip students like Jamie with real-world job experience, but those experiences also give Falcon graduates a leg up on other applicants upon entering the job market.”
Jimenez, who is originally from Delaware, transferred to Fairmont State from WVU in the fall of 2020 after she took a year off to pursue an information technology services internship with the WVU Foundation. When it was time to return to her studies, Jimenez decided she wanted a change of pace.
“When I began planning to go back to school, Fairmont reached out to me and gave me all of the information I needed to get everything situated,” said Jimenez. “I wanted to see what going to a smaller school was like, and I feel like it has been the perfect fit for me. I’m very happy about my decision.”
Since arriving at Fairmont, Jimenez has not only landed the prestigious internship placement, but she has also earned a spot on the University’s Dean’s List. And as she enters her final year of school, Jimenez, who has a particular interest in cyber security, plans to continue seeking varied experiences that will enable her to make an informed decision about her ultimate career path.
“This internship is a great opportunity for me to see what all is out there and how IT integrates with healthcare,” she said. “Healthcare is an area I’ve never had hands-on experience with before, and I’ve already learned so much.”
