Outdoor Leadership (B.A.)

The B.A. in Outdoor Leadership at Fairmont State University prepares students to lead, educate, and inspire others through immersive, field-based learning experiences rooted in leadership, environmental responsibility, and interdisciplinary study. Students in this 120-credit hour degree program gain hands-on training in outdoor skills such as rock climbing, backcountry living, and adventure sports, while also developing leadership, risk management, and program planning expertise. Coursework integrates disciplines including science, business, communication, education, and ethics to prepare graduates for leadership roles in outdoor and adventure-related careers

With West Virginia’s outdoor economy booming and 21,000 projected job openings annually in recreation-related fields, Fairmont State’s program positions students for meaningful careers in environmental education, park services, wilderness therapy, tourism, outdoor entrepreneurship, and more. Curriculum: What You’ll Learn

The Bachelor of Arts in Outdoor Leadership features an interdisciplinary curriculum that provides a broad base of learning. That way you can tailor your curriculum to suit your outdoor leadership goals, whether you want to run a state park, teach, start your own business, or pursue one of dozens of other career tracks.

Outdoor Leardership Model Schedule

Backcountry Living Skills

This Recreation course introduces students to the basic concepts and techniques for recreating and surviving in the backcountry using Leave No Trace methods. Students will actively engage in backpacking, camping, and survival activities to further develop hard skills and environmental ethics.

Intro to Adventure Winter Sports

This course provides an introduction to various adventure water activities including one or all of the following: Cross country skiing, Snow Shoeing, Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, Winter Camping and Mountaineering. Students will be introduced to these activities through experiential learning in and around campus and trips to regional ski and Nordic centers.

Intro to Rock Climbing

This course will focus on the basics of safe and responsible rock climbing. Topics include knots, equipment and care, belaying, rappelling, anchor building, and climbing techniques. Students will be required to participate in rappelling, rock climbing, belaying, and anchor building activities.

Nationally, outdoor recreation supports more than 4.4 million jobs and generates over $450 billion in GDP. Outdoor Leadership graduates are prepared for high-demand careers that foster connection, environmental stewardship, and wellness.

Admissions Requirements

There are no specific admissions requirements for the B.A. in Outdoor Leadership program. To be admitted to Fairmont State, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your official high school transcript or GED/TASC (sent by your high school or Department of Education)
  • ACTor SAT Scores (for students who graduated high school less than 5 years prior to enrollment term) Fairmont State University does not SUPERSCORE results. 

Fairmont State University requires students to have at least a 2.0 high school grade point average (GPA) and an 18 ACT composite or 950 SAT total score (870 combined Critical Reading and Math scores taken prior to March 2016) or at least a 3.0 high school GPA and SAT or ACT composite regardless of the score.

Fairmont State may conditionally admit students who do not meet the basic admissions standards.

College transcript (if college credit was earned during high school)

Outdoor Recreation Leadership Minor

The Outdoor Recreation Leadership Minor provides students pursuing any career path, with an opportunity to increase their employability through the development of leadership skills

Using the outdoors as a learning platform, students engage in classroom and field-based coursework to develop skills in leadership, theoretical knowledge, and teaching that complement their academic major’s area of expertise.  Students interested in professional opportunities in the outdoors learn a wealth of technical skills, group facilitation, and gain an understanding of the significant role outdoor recreation has in the economy, education, physical and mental health, and global awareness.
