Strategic Leadership Impact

Strategic Leadership

The B.S. in Strategic Leadership degree is offered online in an accelerated, asynchronous format and requires 120 credit hours for completion. Those 120 credit hours must consist of the following: 30 hours of General Studies, 30 hours of required BSSL courses, and 60 free elective hours.  For residency purposes, at least 30 credit hours must be completed at Fairmont State University; virtual courses do count toward meeting the residency requirement.  This degree has been designed specifically for adult students who have earned college credit and/or associate degrees and need convenient access to college-level courses to complete their baccalaureate degree. In most cases, previously earned credit hours will have already fulfilled much or all of the needed free elective and/or general studies requirements.

Program Highlights

  • Completely online
  • Accelerated pace
  • Finish in as little as one calendar year
  • Perfect for those who want to earn more, advance their careers, or change careers

Career Opportunities

Compared to those with a two-year degree, graduates with bachelor’s degrees enjoy more job opportunities, higher wages, increased job stability, and have better chances of career advancement or even changing careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the wages of bachelor degree holders, nationally, are nearly 30% higher than those with a two-year degree.

And that advantage is even better for those in West Virginia. West Virginians who are 25 years of age or older with a bachelor’s degree earn nearly 40% more per year than someone with some college or an associate’s degree.

Program Entry Requirements

Students who have earned an associate degree from a regionally accredited institution are eligible for admission to the Strategic Leadership baccalaureate program.

Students who have not earned an associate degree from a regionally accredited institution must have completed either high school or a high school equivalency at least five years prior to program admission, have earned 60 or more hours of transferable college credit from one or more regionally accredited institutions, have an overall GPA of 2.00 or higher, and be in good standing at the last attended institution or eligible for readmission to a baccalaureate degree granting institution.

Course Delivery

Courses are designed using an accelerated approach, with two courses being offered each 7-week half-term, allowing students to complete 12 hours each fall or spring term, and the remaining 6 hours offered over the full 12-week summer term.  Full-time, a student may complete the entire 30-hour curriculum from August through July.

Courses

BSSL students are required to complete or provide transfer credit for the following:

  • Communications — 6 hours
  • Natural Science — 3 hours
  • Mathematics — 3 hours
  • Computer/Information Technology — 3 hours
  • Social Science — 9 hours
  • Humanities/Fine Arts — 6 hours

For students who need to complete either the General Studies or free elective requirements, the online WVROCKS/RBAS classes are an option for Strategic Leadership students as well.

Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours from Fairmont State University in order to meet the BSSL residency requirement. In the event it is determined a student admitted into the program has completed a course that is substantially similar to one of the BSSL required courses, an appropriate substitute will be determined by the advisor with consent of the Dean of the College of Business & Aviation.
