RESA VII & VIII SCIENCE BOWL

Fairmont State University and the US Department of Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will hold the annual Science Bowl preliminary competition for Resa 7 & 8 on Thursday, December 2, 2021.  Students in grades 9 - 12 residing in all counties of RESA 7 & 8 are invited to participate.  This preliminary contest is a qualifying competition for the 2022 West Virginia State Science Bowl held in Morgantown, WV.

The preliminary competition will be held on the campus of Fairmont State University, College of Science & Technology, Engineering Technology building.

Team check-in the day of the event begins at 8AM with the competition beginning at 8:30.  The dining hall will be open for teams who wish to have lunch before returning home (Cash payment).

Teams must register with Fairmont State University by Friday, November 12th, 2021, to participate in this preliminary competition and to be eligible to compete in the state Science Bowl in February.

The West Virginia Regional Science Bowl is affiliated with the National Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Science Bowl is a tournament-style academic competition which tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. During the competition, teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format exploring topics from a full range of STEM disciplines. Middle school and high school teams include four students plus one alternate. At least one teacher serves as a mentor and coach for each team. The top three winning teams from each RESA area may advance from the preliminary competition to state and potentially national competitions. Participation rules, sample questions, and general Science Bowl information may be found at the National Science Bowl website.

Please note:

  • No more than two teams will be accepted from a single school.
  • If three or fewer teams from any given RESA area register to participate in a preliminary competition, those teams will receive an automatic invitation to participate in the WVSB Regional.
  • In a single RESA area preliminary competition involving more than three teams, the top three winning teams will receive an invitation to participate in the WVSB Regional, with at least the fourth placed winners recorded for possible random selection as alternate participants. If fewer than three teams from a single RESA area preliminary competition register to participate, the remaining slots will be filled by choosing at random alternate teams from other single RESA area preliminary competitions.
  • In a combined RESA area preliminary competition involving more than three teams from each of two RESA areas, teams from schools in one RESA area may compete against teams from schools in another RESA area. However, the top three winning teams from each of the two RESA areas will receive an invitation to participate to the 2022 WVSB Regional, with at least the fourth placed winners in each RESA area recorded for possible random selection as alternate participants. If fewer than three teams from a combined RESA area preliminary competition register to participate, the remaining slots will be filled by choosing at least the first alternate team from the other RESA area in that combined competition.

We hope to see you in December!
