Disability Services

A primary objective of Fairmont State is to integrate students with disabilities into all aspects of our learning programs, activities and campus living as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The Office of Disability Services was created to assist each student to function independently in our educational and social environment while utilizing the services provided to ensure equal access.

Support services are available to any student, full or part-time, who has a documented need for accommodations because of a disability. These students must contact the Coordinator for Students with Disabilities. It is the student's responsibility to register for services with the Coordinator and to provide any necessary documentation to verify a disability or the need for accommodations.  Below you will find documents outlining the procedures and documentation criteria to register with the Office of Disability Issues.

As part of our effort to ensure equal access to educational opportunities at Fairmont State, the institution offers the opportunity to be evaluated for the presence of a mental condition, such as a learning disability, attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, and other psychological conditions that may interfere with a student's learning by a qualified professional. Please see our section on Psychological Services for more information about this service.

Note Taking

Student who are granted note taking as an accommodation need the instructors' assistance. The instructor should identify a student in the classroom that will provide a copy (either xerox or carbon) of his/her notes to him/her immediately following class which in turn will be given to the student in need. The student's privacy should be respected and every effort made not to point out the student who has a disability in front of others. It is also a good idea to have a student email the notes to the instructor who can then post them on the Vista site for all students to view. Some note takers are available through the Tutoring Office.
