The Mission of the Music Preparatory Department of The Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts is to provide the highest level of instruction in Music to students of all ages and abilities. This includes opportunities to perform in a safe, positive atmosphere to encourage the creative and artistic growth of all of our members. Our primary objective is to stimulate growth and inspire the creativity of the individual student and to identify and address the musical needs of the community at large.

T.I.M.E. (Totally Into Music Experience) Children's Vocal Camp

This camp is open to any singer's Kindergarten-5th Grade. This will be a one week, high energy experience, culminating with a performance on the last evening. Singer's will be learning and singing music of different genres, stage presence, beginning vocal technique, and movement. Singer's of all experience levels are welcome! Come and join us for a fun-filled week of singing and learning about music!

 

Piano Camp  

Students enrolled in piano camp:
 

1) each get their own keyboard to use during the camp

2) learn to play solos as well as duets with other students

3) receive group and private instruction

4) participate in group activities that make learning about music reading and theory fun 

5) learn about great composers and pianists

6) learn about different styles of piano playing and music

7) enjoy performances by piano camp staff 

8) learn how to practice effectively

9) make new friends!
 

Guitar Camp

Guitar camp is offered for guitarists of all skill levels from age 8 and older. All students will be exposed to instruction in technique, guitar maintenance, history of guitar, staff notation, and performance practice including stage manners and performance skills. Beginning students will have the option of performing in the recital to be held on the last day of the camp. More advanced students will perform a guitar ensemble piece for the recital, in addition to having the option of performing music of their choice as a soloist or as part of a small ensemble.

 

 

Children's Show Choir Camp

This camp is open to any singer in the 6th-9th grade. This will be a two-week, high energy, show choir camp. Students will get the opportunity to learn popular styles of music, along with different styles of dance.  Singer's  of all experience levels are welcome! The camp will culminate in a concert at the conclusion of the two weeks.

 

 

 

Teen Show Choir Camp

This camp is open to any singer in the 10th-12th grade. This will be a two-week, high energy, show choir camp. Students will get the opportunity to learn popular styles of music, along with different styles of dance.  Singer's  of all experience levels are welcome! The camp will culminate in a concert at the conclusion of the two weeks.

 

 

Creative Composition for Kids

This course is for budding young Mozarts!  Using Garageband and Finale music creation software, young composers will learn the basics of music composition in Fairmont’s new digital music lab.  Make a hit single or compose a symphony; students will be able to compose for whatever musical genre they choose.   Along with practical music software skills, students will learn theory and analysis skills applicable to all musical genres.  This class is appropriate for all young students regardless of previous technology or musical experience.

 

 

Music Theory Brush-up

This music theory class is designed to prepare college-bound music students for their first-semester music theory and aural skills classes.  Students will gain the necessary music theory and aural skills necessary for first-semester music theory and ear training classes without the need for remedial or review classes.  Topics covered include the following:

 

Written Theory Topics:

 

    - Review basics such as musical symbols and common foreign terminology.

    - Drills for fluency in note reading, major and minor scales, and key signature recognition.

    - Triad and seventh-chord analysis.

 

Aural Skills Topics:

 

    - Identification of intervals, scales, and harmonies by ear.

    - Melodic and rhythmic dictation.

    - Sight singing and solfege.
