The Creative Writing Department of the Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts supports the creativity and ingenuity of students by offering instruction in writing fiction, poetry, and non-fiction.  Our nationally published teachers encourage students to develop their talents by through a regular routine of writing, work-shopping, and revision.  Students learn about publishing and the various markets for writing.

Fiction Writing

This course seeks to acquaint students with the practical elements of writing short fiction, with a focus on finding and refining a personal writer's voice.  Students will read and discuss examples of the art of fiction writing as well as write and revise their own work in a workshop format. Special emphasis will be placed on developing skills as preparation for professional submission.

 

A.C.T. Prep

 

This course will focus on helping students prepare for the A.C.T. writing.  Students will practice thesis development and support of that thesis in lively interactive class sessions.  Students will write in response to prompts and workshop those responses to learn to write quickly and effectively under pressure.
