Visual Art Preparatory Classes Offered
Young Artists Open Studio
Ages 5-8 (1 hour) Saturdays March 3rd - May 5th at 12:00pm – 1:00pm

Class Description :
Fairmont State University is offering a program where children who love art can learn and have
fun. Encourage your child’s imagination and enroll them in the wonderful and exciting world of
creativity. Our curriculum offers children the opportunity to use a variety of new media as well
as the ability to improve on problem solving skills, self awareness, and technical capacity. So if
your youngster has shown an interest in the arts, give them the chance to embark on an
amazing journey of originality, values, and fun.
Theatre Preparatory Classes Offered
Creative drama
Ages 6-9 (1 hour) Saturdays March 3rd - March 31st at 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Class Description :
Using source materials such as books, songs and poems, children will create improvised stories under the direction of a drama instructor. This class will also include drama games, movement and improvisation activities that encourage concentration, working together, listening and creativity. This course may be repeated. The source material will change each semester.
(1 hour for 5 weeks)
Improvisation
Ages 10-13 Saturdays April 7th - May 5th at 12:00pm-1:00pm
Class Description :
Students will create solo, partner and
group scenes using improvisation techniques. In this course, students will explore listening and
reacting, creating character, dialogue, pantomime and story building.
(1 hour for 5 weeks)
Acting for Teens
Ages 13-18 (1 ½ hours) Saturdays March 3rd – May 5th 10:30am - 12:00pm
Class Description :
In this course, student will explore basic acting skills including concentration, listening and reacting, physical and vocal awareness and character develop. It will also include basic improvisation and open-scene work. This class may be repeated.

Dance Preparatory Classes Offered
Modern Dance Class
Ages 13-Adult (1 ½ hours) Starts Saturday March 3rd 1:00pm - 2:30pm
Class Description :
Modern dance explores movement, space, rhythm and the dancer’s own creativity with emphasizes
on momentum, shapes and patterns and levels. This form of dance is inspired by nature, music, art,
and human emotions. Students will explore the space by learning several modern dance techniques
such as Graham & Cunningham.
(1 ½ hours for 10 weeks)
Folk dance Class
Ages 10-Adult (1 hour) Starts Saturday March 3rd 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Class Description :
Students will explore several traditional dances involving lines, circles and partnerships from
various countries such as: Poland, Germany and Italy. This form of dance is story-telling by giving
historical references to the people and places. Students begin by learning how each movement can
represent what they did for a living or their everyday lifestyles of that specific country.
(1 hour for 10 weeks)
Beginning Appalachian Clogging
Ages 8-Adult (1 hour) Starts Saturday March 3rd 2:30pm - 3:30pm
Class Description :
Students will learn the beginning and basics of Appalachian Clog dance. Irish, Scottish, English, and
German folk dance will turn into a foot tapping style usually performed to the downbeat of a song with the heels of the foot keeping the rhythm. From influences of the Cherokee Indians, to African American and Russian Gypsies, clogging will be taught as the true “melting pot” of step dance that it has become.
(1 hour for 10 weeks)
Intermediate/Advanced Clogging
Ages 10-Adult (1 Hour 15 Minutes) Starts Saturday March 3rd 3:30pm - 4:45pm
Class Description :
Students will expand their footwork and dance knowledge to become current with the competitive
nature of percussive dance and movement of today. Tap, Canadian step dance, Irish Hard Shoe, and even street dancing and hip-hop influences will be incorporated into modern day percussive dance. More attention will be paid to precision, placement, and movement as a group.
(1 hour and 15 minutes for 10 weeks)
Music Preparatory Classes Offered
Children’s Show Choir
Ages 7-11 (1 Hour) Starts Sunday March 4th 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Class Description :
Children’s Show Chorus is open to students ages 7 to 11. Students will learn the fundamentals of singing in an ensemble and have the chance to perform. This ensemble meets Sundays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in room 229, Wallman Hall.
Teen Show Choir
Ages 12 - 18 (1 ½ hours) Starts Sunday March 4th 4:45pm - 6:15pm
Class Description :
Choir is open to students ages 12 and up. Students will learn a variety of choral repertoire and have a chance to positively interact with their musical peers. Choir members will also have the chance to perform. This ensemble meets Sundays from 4:45pm to 6:15 pm in room 229, Wallman Hall.
Guitar Ensemble
Must Meet Requirements (1 Hour) Starts Wednesdays February 29th 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Class Description :
Guitar Ensemble is open to guitar students who have reached an intermediate level of playing. Students will learn to play a variety of music as a group and have the opportunity to perform. Registrants are required to own a guitar and have the ability to tune it, preferably with an electronic tuner. Guitar ensemble students must be able to read standard staff notation in the first position and be familiar with rhythmic patterns that include dotted note values and triplets. This ensemble meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 in room 206, Wallman Hall.
Introduction to Piano:
Any Age (1 Hour) Starts Monday February 27th 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Class Description :
It's never too late to learn to play piano! This course introduces the basics of piano playing, music reading, and theory in a group setting in Fairmont State University's state of the art piano lab. Perfect for anyone who would like to explore the piano in a low pressure environment along with a friend, spouse, or family member, or anyone who wants to build a good foundation before beginning private lessons. Though the focus of this course is group instruction, students will also receive some individual instruction as well.
Students enrolled in this course will need to purchase a book designated by the instructor prior to the first class meeting.
