Department of Music

The Fairmont State University Department of Music provides excellent musical instruction for its students through a highly qualified professional staff of performing and teaching professors, a constantly improving and varied curriculum, and a series of sequential musical experiences for students in all music degree programs. The department delivers in exposing music students to many new and innovative educational and musical ideas as well as emphasizing the musical heritage of the past. The music department offers a variety of ensembles, including marching band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, African drum and dance ensemble, collegiate singers, and chamber choir. These ensembles regularly perform on campus, at regional events, and on performance tours. 

Be a Music Major for a Day - October 10, 2016

Please join us on October 10, 2016 to experience the Department of Music at Fairmont State University. Any student that is considering a major or minor in music is invited to join our department for the day to experience what the Department of music offers its students. Register for the day by completing the online registration form. Please register by Friday, October 7, 2016

9:00 a.m. – Welcome and Introductions 
10:00 a.m. – Visit a music class 
11 a.m. – Financial Aid Presentation and Q&A with current FSU Music Majors 
12 p.m. – Lunch with Department of Music faculty 
1 p.m. – Campus Tour or visit with FSU Choir 
2 p.m. – Seniors – Audition / Underclassmen and Parents – Explore Bookstore 
3 p.m. – visit Marching Band rehearsal at the practice field

Department of Music - Scholarship Audition Day - February 10, 2017

Scholarship opportunities are available to music majors and minors by audition only. Please contact Dr. Samuel Spears for more information concerning scheduling an audition. 

Music Education Major

Students completing the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education (pre-k to adult) will be able to seek employment in primary or secondary school as Music Specialists or apply for graduate school. 

Performing Music Ensembles

All music ensembles are open to Fairmont State University and Peirpont Community & Technical College students regardless of their major. 

B.A. in Music Major

Bachelor of Arts degree students will receive in-depth study in music that will prepare them for graduate school and develop skills that will help them attain employment after graduating. 

Department of Music Scholarships

Through audition and application, scholarships are available to music majors, minors, and students that participate in performing ensembles.

Music Minor

In addition to completing their intended major, Music Minors will develop a greater understanding of music through theory, history, private instruction, and performing ensembles.
