OVERVIEW OF THE HEALTH EDUCATION TEACHER EDUCATION (HETE) PROGRAM

The Health Education - Teacher Education (HETE) program is a specialized program of study designed to prepare teacher candidates with the requisite knowledge, attitudinal insight, and related classroom experiences necessary for entry into the field of school health instruction.

This degree includes varied course offerings focusing on specialized areas of study that integrate health content and instructional strategies. The HETE curriculum (32 credit hours) is comprised do three areas of course work: content-related, pedagogical/theory-related, and application/activity courses.  After meeting the School of Education's entry-level requirements for admission into the teacher education program and achieving an overall GPA of 2.75 for all health education coursework, students complete their teacher training experience with a teaching practicum in the public schools. This program culminates in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education that offers an instructional specialization in Health Education, grades 5-Adult.

All certified teacher candidates must complete the general studies requirements, a core of professional education courses, health education course-work, and a second teaching field.  A collaborative completion of this degree and physical education facilitates public school teaching employment in all of WV's 55 counties. Most school districts seek educators possessing dual certifications in both Health and Physical Education with job openings often posted as such.  They often seek physical educators who also possess health education training and teacher certification. FSU provides one of the state's only programs offering this dual certification.
