The School of Education, Health and Human Performance offers two graduate degrees and two non-degree certification/certificate program options:

  • The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is designed for college graduates with a Bachelors degree in liberal arts, fine arts, or professional  fields to attain initial teacher licensure.
  • The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree includes six concentrations designed to meet the needs of college graduates seeking to enhance their career opportunities through advanced study in the fields of Digital Media, New Literacies and Learning; Exercise Science; Online Learning; Professional Studies; Reading; and Special Education. 
  • Teacher certification only programs prepare candidates who hold a teaching license and are not seeking a Masters degree and are available for Reading Specialist certification, certification in Multi-Categorical Special Education, and certification in Autism.
  • A professional certificate program in Online Learning is available for candidates who are not seeking teacher certification or a Masters degree.

In addition to the professional standards specific to the fields of study described above, our graduate programs are designed to support the development of the Fairmont State University Graduate Studies Outcomes.  Graduates of advanced programs at FSU are prepared to demonstrate in their professional practice that they have the knowledge, skills and dispositions to engage in:

  1. Critical Analysis.  Adapt and apply new knowledge and skills in critical analysis of changing conditions in the field.
  2. Scholarship and Research. Critically analyze and conduct research in the field.
  3. Creative Productivity. Engage in creative productive activity in the field.
  4. Application of Standards-based Professional Knowledge and Skills. Apply new, advanced, standards-based knowledge and skills in the context of the field.
  5. Professional Development. Engage in critical self-analysis and articulate professional goals.
  6. Professional Communication. Demonstrate effective and appropriate verbal, nonverbal, written, and media communication techniques in the profession.
